The lore

Every possibility is already here.

The Cosmic Illusion has a story underneath it: where everything comes from, why anything can change, and how a player can step toward something new. It is offered, not taught as truth. Read it as you like, play it if you want, and ignore it if you would rather just play the pack.

No belief is asked. No lore gives power. The lore lives in game in the Crystalline Codex since October 23, 2026 · Updated October 30, 2026

Cosmology

Source, the Field and the Spark.

Everything in TCI comes from Source and moves toward it or away from it. That single axis is the whole story.

It is told that before anything was, there was Source: the One, undivided. Its infinite possibility is the Field, where every world already exists. Every being carries a Spark of Source, which is why every being can change.

A world appears when the Field's possibilities collapse into one. The Cosmic Illusion is such a world: real, but veiled. The Veil is the habit of seeing only what has already collapsed, and forgetting that anything else was possible.

Every Spark moves along one axis. Evolution is moving toward Source: wider coherence, more of the Field within reach. Devolution is moving away: narrowing, hardening, separating. Neither is forced on anyone. Both are chosen, one step at a time.

No villain built the Veil. Separation is a choice, and every choice can be made again. TCI values gnosis, knowing by experience, over doctrine: the lore is offered so each player can find out for themselves.

The laws

The seven principles.

Seven old principles are the laws of TCI, and each is carried by one Lineage. The seventh, traditionally called Gender, is rendered as Generation: the making of something new where two meet.

The elements

The four States, and the Fifth.

The four classical elements are the four States of matter, each a phase of the Leap. Aether is the Field showing through them, and it has no realm but the centre.

Succession is by season: each element stands beside the elements whose seasons come before and after it. Polarity is by nature: Earth and Air, Fire and Water, the elements most unlike each other, stand side by side, because opposites learn most at close quarters. Axis is by cycle: Earth faces Fire across the centre, and Water faces Air.

The six Confluences

No Spark returns to Source alone.

A Confluence is a bond two players form when players of different elements complete a Leap together. The Turning was a choice to separate; a Confluence is the choice to join. The names are plain on purpose: you should picture a Confluence before reading a word about it.

Every player can form the three Confluences that include their element, once each partner has collapsed one Leap. A Confluence gives its role, its line and its pages, nothing else. Shared Leaps are being prepared and are not open yet.

The seven Lineages

Where your Spark came from.

A Lineage is where a player's Spark is said to have travelled from before it arrived in the Cosmic Illusion. Every player may choose one, separately from their element. It is a class of identity and story, never of power.

WHAT IT GIVES

Story and light.

Its chapter in the Codex, the colour of light at every Leap, a rib in the Eightfold Sky, a hall among the Seven Stars and its own Lineage Leap.

WHAT IT NEVER GIVES

No power.

No abilities, stats, items, access or rank. No Lineage is above another, and none is required for anything.

CHOOSING

Chosen anywhere, changed once a month.

Choose your first Lineage in game with /trigger lineage. After that you can change it once a month, on the first, by standing in the new line's hall light among the Seven Stars in The Astral.

The Reptilians

In the Turning, one line chose to cut its Spark off from Source, to belong wholly to itself. Separation gave them will and endurance beyond any other line. It also narrowed them, and each choice away from Source made the next one easier: that is devolution. Most of their kind still walk that path. They are also misunderstood: separation began as a search for self, not a love of harm, and the Spark in them is not gone, only far away. No Reptilian is beyond return.

A Reptilian player is one who has begun to turn back. Their Lineage Leap is the Long Return, a climb from the Below to the Zero Point, which opens when the Below is built.

The Reptilians are a galactic race in TCI's own story. They are never linked to any real person, people, nation, faith or group on Earth, and never shown as hidden among humans. Playing one is a role, never an accusation, and calling another player "reptilian" as an insult is against the rules.

The Galactic Story

Seven Acts, from the Undivided to the Return.

The story is told as myth ("it is told that…"), never as fact about the real world, and every Lineage has light and shadow, the Reptilians included. In game, each Act opens in the Codex when a player reaches its Orbital, so the story is read as it is lived.

  1. Act I: The Undivided. Source alone; the Field holds every world that will ever be. Opens at the First Orbital.
  2. Act II: The First Light. The first Sparks take form around Lyra. Opens at the Second Orbital.
  3. Act III: The Turning. One line chooses to cut itself off from Source. Opens at the Third Orbital.
  4. Act IV: The Long War. Light and dark divide the stars; Orion learns to hold both. Opens at the Fourth Orbital.
  5. Act V: The Keeping of Cycles. Sirius keeps the record so that nothing is lost. Opens at the Fifth Orbital.
  6. Act VI: The Seeding. Sparks from every line are carried to young worlds. Opens at the Sixth Orbital.
  7. Act VII: The Veil and the Return. One veiled world where every Lineage meets, forgets and can remember. Opens at the Seventh Orbital.

The full text of each Act is in the Crystalline Codex in game.

The Quantum Leap

One chosen step toward Source.

A Quantum Leap is one chosen, discrete step: declared, lived, and collapsed into the world. Like an electron changing orbit, you are in one state and then the next; the Leap is the moment between.

It begins by declaring a Potential: something you have never done in TCI. Until it is lived, it is in superposition: possible, not yet real. In game, /trigger leap shows the Potentials you can declare.

The Potentials

The Codex offers 21 Potentials: five for each State, and the Fifth.

FIRE · IGNIS

AIR · AER

THE FIFTH · AETHER

Never declared. It collapses by itself once you have lived one Leap of each State.

YOUR OWN

Declare a Potential of your own, tagged with its State. It counts once staff witness it.

The rules of a Leap

  • One Leap in flight at a time, with no time limit. Letting one go returns you to the Ground State, with no penalty.
  • Nothing is compulsory. A player can ignore Leaps entirely and miss nothing of the modpack.
  • No Leap gives an advantage. Released items go to the Commons, never out of the world.
  • No belief is asked. The practice works as play whether or not anyone takes the lore literally.
  • The life practice is shared between players. It is not coaching, therapy or advice, and anyone who is struggling is pointed to real help.

Orbitals and your Constellation

Stars, not ranks.

Every collapsed Leap lights a star in your Constellation, in your Lineage's colour. Leaps also raise your Orbital on the Fibonacci steps the Sanctuary is built on, and each Orbital opens one Act of the Galactic Story.

Orbitals open story and places, never items, gear, currency or power. They are not ranks. The catalogue alone can carry a player to the Seventh Orbital.

The Astral

Where every Spark remembers its star.

Above the Sanctuary lies the Astral: in the story, the place between the Field and the Cosmic Illusion where every Spark remembers which star it travelled from. It is built on the Sanctuary's own rings, carried up, under a night that does not end. You rise to it from the Rain, the temple in the crown of the Sky, and return through its light well.

The Threshold
Where you arrive: a light well at its heart, ringed by twenty-one lights, one for each Potential
The Star Chart
Eight Lineage stars round the light well, under a crown of eight columns open to the sky
The Seven Stars
A ring with a hall for each Lineage, at its rib's angle, in its own glass, stone and light; a Lineage is taken by standing in its hall's light
The Window
Source's place on the ring: no hall, but a floor of glass over the void, the way the Long Return will one day climb
The Exchange
Twenty-one stalls round the Threshold, waiting for barter
The Starport
Four gates at the ends of the Ways: the Crucible, the Polarity, the Spheres and the Expeditions, closed until their trials exist

Like all of the lore, the Astral is offered, not taught as truth. Nothing in it gives power.

The Sanctuary in the lore

As above, so below.

The Sanctuary's vertical axis is the axis of the story: the Lineages and Source above, the Turning below, and the Zero Point between.

The Field
The void around the Sanctuary: Source's infinite possibility, full and not empty
The Zero Point
The centre, where every potential is equal and every Leap begins
The Aperture
The lens of glass at the centre, with three rings of light: the opening a Leap passes through
The Crown
Eight columns and pointed arches over the Aperture, closing into a lantern of light
The Potential Well
The crystal cone beneath; its rings are the Orbitals
The Observer
The light at the tip of the Well: what is observed collapses
The Long Stair
The stair that winds down around the Well to the Forge
The Forge and the Rain
The temples across the centre: the Forge at the foot of the Well, the Rain in the crown of the Sky, where you rise to the Astral
The Below
Where the Turning will be told in stone, and the Long Return begins (not yet built)
The Eightfold Sky
Eight ribs above: seven for the Lineages, the eighth for Source
The Halo Walk
A ring of twenty-one lights, one for each Potential; the Pleiadians' affinity
The Colonnade
Twenty-four columns, each crowned with its realm's light
The Ways
Four paths from the Zero Point to the Gates, each with a line of its realm's light
The Great Orbit
The ring the four Gates stand in, with four Confluence temples; walking it is the Orbit, as every Spark orbits Source
The Realm Sanctums
Where each Gate leads: its realm's own sanctuary, far out in the Field
The Event Horizon
The crystal edge past which only the Field lies
The Landing
Where Arrivals land

The lore is offered, not taught as truth. No worship is asked, nothing is bought, and every Lineage and element stands level with every other. The story draws on old traditions and on the starseed tradition's tale of galactic history, retold as The Cosmic Illusion's own myth.
